It’s a reliable performer that quickly forms a dense mat, helping to suppress weeds and define garden spaces. Read on for our complete guide on how to plant and care for this versatile groundcover.
Top Ajuga Cultivars for Central Texas
While Ajuga comes in several varieties, we recommend two outstanding cultivars that consistently thrive in our local climate and offer superior foliage contrast.
Ajuga ‘Black Scallop’
This variety is prized for its compact, black-purple, scalloped foliage. The dark, rich color provides a dramatic contrast when planted alongside lighter green plants like ferns.
Its tight, mat forming habit makes it an excellent choice for a uniform, carpet-like groundcover. It typically grows to about 1 foot in diameter and 6 inches high.
The bloom spike is 3 to 4 inches and covered with beautiful purple flowers.
Ajuga’Caitlin’s Giant’
Featuring larger, deep emerald-green leaves, ‘Catlin’s Giant’ grows slightly looser and fuller then ‘Black Scallop’, making it ideal for a less structured look. It can reach up to 1/5 in diameter and 6 inches high. (not including the bloom spike).
The foliage of the ‘Catlin’s Giant’ is larger and thicker as opposed to the ‘Black Scallop. The bloom spike is thicker as well – both have a approximate 4″ spike with purple tubular blooms.
Ajuga Planting & Growing Guide
To ensure your Ajuga thrives, follow these key instructions, especially when planting in the Austin, Texas area:
Sun and Shade Requirements
Ajuga is primarily known as a shade plant. While it can handle morning sun or dappled light (part-sun), placing it in deep, intense afternoon sun in Texas will cause the leaves to scorch and fade. For the best, most vibrant color, particularly in darker varieties like ‘Black Scallop’, ensure it receives protection from the harsh midday sun.
Water and Soil Needs
Soil: Plant Ajuga in rich, well-draining soil. We highly recommend amending your native clay soil with a high-quality compost before planting.
Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during its first growing season. Once established, Ajuga is relatively drought-tolerant but will look its absolute best with regular watering, particularly during extended dry periods.
Design Ideas: Pairing Ajuga in Your Landscape
Ajuga’s contrasting colors and low, spreading growth habit make it perfect for many landscape applications:
- Groundcover: Plant in masses to quickly create a dense uniform carpet in difficult shade areas.
- Border Plant: Use it to defind the edges of landscape beds or walkways.
- Container Filler: The contrasting foliage and low grown make Ajuga an excellent “filler “or “spiller” in mixed container plantings.
- Companion Plants: Ajuga pairs beautifully with other shade-lovers. Try combining it with classics like Sword Ferns, Foxtail Ferns, Dwarf Yaupon Holly, and Boxwood to create layered interest.
