Who doesn’t love Meyer Lemons?
If you do, have you ever considered growing your own? They are easy to grow and soon your will have grown your own Meyer Lemons of if you prefer, oranges, lemons, limes and tangerines!
There are so many different varieties to choose from. My personal favorite is the Meyer Lemon. They are sweet and delicious and exciting to grow. I love all the stages from bloom to fruit.
The blooms on the citrus trees are incredibly fragrant. They produce clusters of blooms which then turn into fruit. Depending on the variety of citrus you have, you might have multiple bloom/ fruit cycles. The oranges and tangerines have one cycle per year and the Meyer Lemons and Mexican Limes have multiple. The scent of the blooms fills the air and is one of the sweetest smells of all. The bees and butterflies will flock to the blooms which for me is another reason to want to plant them.
The fruit on the Meyer Lemon is large, sweet and juicy.
If you have ever compared the lemon from a grocery store to a homegrown lemon you will be astonished at the taste difference. This goes for any homegrown fruit for that matter, but the Meyer Lemon especially. Most people report that is is almost as sweet as an orange.
The Meyer Lemons (as well as any of the citrus) can be grown in shrub form or patio tree style form depending on your preference. We recommend planting and growing them in containers using a quality landscape soil that has good drainage. Don’t forget to make sure your container has a hole! They are easily and best kept in containers as it is important to protect the roots (as well as the entire plant) in instances of cold weather in the winter which we get from time to time here in Austin and the Dripping Springs area.
