Meyer Lemon

Meyer Lemon, sweet and delicious citrus fruit and exciting to grow

Who doesn’t love Meyer Lemons?

Have you ever considered growing your own?  They are easier to grow than most people think.   How fun to have grown your own Meyer Lemons!  Perfect for tea, water, baking, cooking Salmon, the list goes on.   Imagine walking out your back door and picking your own lemon from your own tree.

There are several varieties of lemons you could grow.  My personal favorite is the Meyer Lemon.   It is by far the most popular one to grow and it is not hard to understand why.   The fruit itself when ripe is a large yellow juicy lemon, much larger than you see in the grocery store.  They are sweet and delicious.

It is very exciting to see them grow in stages from bloom to fruit.

First you have the blooms.  The blooms on the Meyer Lemon citrus trees are incredibly fragrant. (as with all citrus).   They produce clusters of blooms which then turn into a small little fruit.  Some/ most will fall off, your tree could not possibly hold all the fruit it produces at onset.

From there the fruit swells and grows and in no time you will have a large yellow Meyer Lemon!

The Meyer Lemon typically have multiple round of blooms and fruit in a year.  If you are growing a different citrus, it depends on the variety as to the number of bloom/ fruit cycles.  For example- oranges and tangerines have one cycle per year and the Meyer Lemons and Mexican Limes have multiple.

One thing that is common with all the citrus is the fragrance.  The scent of the blooms fills the air and is one of the sweetest smells of all.  The bees and butterflies will flock to the blooms which for me is another reason to want to plant them.

The fruit on the Meyer Lemon is large, sweet and juicy.

The Meyer Lemons (as well as any of the citrus) can be grown in shrub form or patio tree style form depending on your preference.  We recommend planting and growing them in containers using a quality landscape soil that has good drainage.  Don’t forget to make sure your container has a hole!  They are easily and best kept in containers.   It is important to protect the roots (as well as the entire plant) in instances of cold weather in the winter which we get from time to time here in Austin and the Dripping Springs area.

Have ever compared the lemon from a grocery store to a homegrown lemon?   You will be astonished at the look as well as the difference in taste.  This goes for any homegrown fruit for that matter, but the Meyer Lemon especially.  Most people report that the Meyer Lemon is almost as sweet as an orange.
