Four-Nerve Daisy: The Perfect Year-Round Bloomer for Austin Gardens

Looking for a “plant it and forget it” perennial that defies the harsh Texas heat?  Look no further than the Four-Nerve Daisy (Tetraneuris scaposa).

At Vivero Growers Nursery, we frequently recommend this Texas native powerhouse.  It’s a favorite for Austin and Dripping Springs gardeners .  It offers consistent color without the high water bill.  Are you designing a rugged Hill Country rock garden? Or maybe you need a tidy border plant for a modern landscape. Either way, the Four-Nerve Daisy is a top-tier choice.

What is Four-Nerve Daisy?

Bright yellow Four-Nerve Daisy blooming for an Austin native plant gardenThe Four-Nerve Daisy (also known as Hymenoxys) is a low-growing, clump-forming perennial.  It is native to the dry plains and rocky ridges of Texas. You can easily identify it by its silvery-green, grass-like foliage. Its cheerful, daisy-like flowers sit on top of slender, leafless stalks.

The name “Four-Nerve” comes from the four distinct dark veins (nerves) visible on the underside of each yellow ray petal.  This is a tiny detail that highlights the intricate beauty of this hardy native.

Why Central Texas Gardeners Love It

    •    Near-Constant Blooms: Peak bloom is in the spring. However, this plant famously blooms nearly year-round—even during mild Austin winters.
    •    Extreme Drought Tolerance: Once established, it requires very little supplemental water, making it a cornerstone of xeriscaping.
    •    Deer Resistant: A bitter resin in its foliage generally keeps deer away. Just remember that “deer resistant” does not mean “deer proof”.
    •    Pollinator Magnet: It is a vital nectar source for native bees and butterflies. This is especially true when other plants have gone dormant.

Quick Care Guide: Four Nerve Daisy

Height and Spread

Height- 6 to 12 inches.  Spread 6 to 12 inches.

Light and Placement

The Four-Nerve Daisy thrives in full sun. It can tolerate some afternoon shade in the July heat. However, too much shade leads to fewer blooms and a leggy look. It is an ideal choice for ‘hellstrips’ or south-facing rocky slopes.

Soil and Drainage

If there is one “must” for this plant, it is drainage. It naturally grows in rocky, alkaline, and limestone-heavy soils. Does your garden have heavy clay? Consider using raised beds. You can also add crushed granite. This ensures water doesn’t pool and cause root rot.

Watering Needs

Water your Four-Nerve Daisy at least twice a week for the first month. This helps the roots establish. Once established, it survives on natural rainfall. A deep soak every two weeks during a drought will keep it looking its best.

Landscaping Ideas for the Hill Country

Because of its compact size, the Four Nerve Daisy is incredibly versatile:

  • Mass Plantings: Use groups of 5 or 7 plants. This creates a beautiful “carpet of gold” effect in your garden.

  • Modern Borders: These plants provide a tidy, evergreen edge. They look great along a gravel path.

  • The “Native Trio”: Pair them with Mealy Blue Sage and Blackfoot Daisy. This creates a classic, low-maintenance Texas palette.

  • Container Gardening: Their small size and high heat tolerance make them perfect “fillers”. Try them in decorative pots on sunny patios.
