Purple Fountain GrassMaybe you like colorful foliage?   Purple Fountain Grass and the Pennisetum ‘First Night’ have you covered.  They have colorful foliage- purple and black respectively.   Not to be overlooked is the ‘Feather Top’ Pennisetum. These have white billowy plumes.   Grasses require minimal maintenance and are drought-tolerant once established, making them perfect for the Texas climate.

Planting and Care

To plant ornamental grasses, start by preparing the soil. Remove any weeds or debris and amend the soil with compost or other organic matter. Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the root ball and plant the grass at the same depth it was in its container.

Water the grass thoroughly after planting and continue to water regularly until it becomes established. Once established, ornamental grasses can thrive with minimal watering and care.  If we have a crazy winter, you can mulch your more tender grasses like the Purple Fountain Grass and the Pennisetum ‘First Night’.

Keep in mind, if kept in a container, you will need to water them.  This goes with any plant as they will not be able to establish themselves in the ground.   The larger the container the better to allow them to establish a larger root system and also will not need to be watered as frequently.  Just remember, plants are not drought tolerant in containers.
