How to Have Success with Living Walls in Austin
Living walls are a stunning addition to any home, but our Texas heat requires a bit of planning. Here are a few tips to keep your vertical garden lush:
Choose the Right Location: For outdoor walls in Austin, a spot with bright morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal, especially if you are using succulents or ferns.
Pick Your Plants:
Sun-Lovers: Use Echeveria, Sedum, and Agaves.
Shade-Lovers: Opt for house plants, ferns, or creeping fig.
Watering is Key: Vertical gardens dry out faster than traditional pots. Consider a built-in drip irrigation system or choose drought-tolerant plants to reduce maintenance.
Start Small: If you’re new to vertical gardening, try a small container garden on a wall before tackling a large-scale installation.

It doesn’t matter what your combinations are- succulents, sedum, echeveria, house plants, veggies, herbs- mix and match and play around.
Think outside the box and create your own colorful mix of plants. More importantly, have fun with it and if you aren’t that adventurous, just look at all the ones others have done and sit back and admire!!!
