The Majesty of the Montezuma Cypress: A Central Texas Treasure at Vivero Growers
Here at Vivero Growers Nursery in Austin, Texas, we’re passionate about bringing the beauty and resilience of native and adapted plants to your landscape. When it comes to trees that truly embody the spirit of Central Texas, few can rival the magnificent Montezuma Cypress (Taxodium huegelii, formerly Taxodium mucronatum).
Often mistaken for its cousin, the Bald Cypress that grows along our central Texas rivers, the Montezuma Cypress offers a unique set of characteristics that make it particularly well-suited for our region. Like the Bald Cypress, the Montezuma Cypress is known for its soft feathery needles and beautiful foliage that provide year-round beauty and shade.
Growing in the Heart of Central Texas
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Montezuma Cypress is its incredible adaptability to our diverse Central Texas conditions. While it thrives in moist to wet soils and along streams and river banks—often forming stunning riparian corridors—it also demonstrates a surprising tolerance for drier conditions once established. That is to say it makes it an excellent choice for a variety of landscapes. For example those with natural water features or those with more urban settings.
At Vivero Growers, we cultivate healthy, robust Montezuma Cypress trees ready to flourish in your yard. These trees, once they’ve settled in, exhibit strong growth and a spreading canopy providing ample shade and a serene presence. They are relatively fast-growing, especially with adequate water. Their deep root systems help them withstand our occasional droughts.
A Tree Steeped in History and Grandeur
Beyond its practical benefits, the Montezuma Cypress carries a rich history, particularly in its native range of Mexico and parts of Central America. The Montezuma Cypress has been revered for centuries, playing a significant role in ancient cultures. Its wood was used for construction, and its grand presence often marked sacred sites.
Perhaps the most famous example of this ancient lineage is the “El Árbol del Tule” (The Tree of Tule), a truly awe-inspiring Montezuma Cypress located in Santa María del Tule, Oaxaca, Mexico. This colossal tree is estimated to be over 2,000 years old and boasts the stoutest trunk circumference of any tree in the world—a testament to the incredible longevity and size these trees can achieve. Standing before it is a humbling experience, connecting you to centuries of natural history.

plant expedition to Oaxaca, Mexico. It is hard to put into words what it was like to see this tree in person. Truly an amazing experience. It is hard to believe that this tree is 2,000 years old. The size and stature of the tree was so impressive, it was challenging to capture it’s full presence in photos. There is a fence that surrounds the tree to protect it from people climbing on it, graffiti and or carving into the tree.
Traveling to southern Mexico, Oaxaca City? Make sure to make the trip to Tule- about 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca City. A must see on your list.
