Why Crossvine is the Best Evergreen Vine for Austin!
Crossvine, Bignonia capreolata, is an excellent choice for sun or shade. This vibrant vine thrives in almost any light condition. This evergreen vine is perfect to plant where you want a vine that is low maintenance and blooms repeatedly.
The orange and yellow tubular blooms are beautiful. Not surprisingly, they are a huge hit with local hummingbirds! The Crossvine have a nice dark green leaf and is drought tolerant once established. The blooms can be quite showy and are simply beautiful. They bloom more in the full sun but as you can see from the photo above, bloom abundantly in the full shade as well.
We took the photo above right here at the nursery. This specific spot gets very little filtered light. The Crossvine do not grow incredibly thick/dense like some of the other vines, something I personally like about them. You can direct them easily to grow up or down or across. Simply move the tendrils where you want the vine to grow. In addition, they need something to grow on to- a trellis or fence or panel, as they are not self attaching.
I tried to get a photograph of the hummingbirds with the blooms but was not able to get a good photo.
They live in the tree which is right next to this fence and zip down all the time and “work over” the blooms.
