Looking for something that is sculptural, drought tolerant, evergreen and unique? Plant Yucca rostrata!
Yucca rostrata is an excellent choice for a low water drought tolerant landscape or container. The Yucca rostrata is a Texas native that has silver blue leaves and is a trunk forming Yucca. Whether you plant a mature specimen or a smaller one, both are a stunning compliment for your garden and landscape. They looks fantastic with basically any color you put next to it- greens really pop, blue seem to shine and reds are a personal favorite. Whichever color you choose to plant it with or even if you plant it on it’s own, it is sure to “wow” and show off in any setting.
The Yucca rostrata should be planted with plants that have similar water requirements. This is a wide variety of low water plants for example as shown below: Ice Plant, Giant Yucca, Santa Rita Cactus and Tecoma stans. It is an evergreen plant which sends up a bloom stalk in the early summer loaded with white flowers as shown in the first photo.
The Yucca rostrata requires little if any care other than to make sure when planting, that it gets proper drainage. It does not (like most things) like to sit in water. So if you need to, throw some rocks in there and / or plant in crushed granite and as always, make sure the spot/hole has proper drainage. If planting in a pot, goes without saying…. make sure the pot has a hole.
